Analysis of economic indicators of the city of Daugavpils for the year 2012

Industry

The amount of production in 2012, compared with 2011, increased by 11% and it is 159 497 thousands lats.

 The amount of realized production is even higher which suggest that managed to realize also a lot of production which were in stock.

11.5% improvement observed in the food industry. Limited liability company “Daugavpils gaļas kombināts” 2.5 times increased amount of realized production, good results had Daugavpils companies of bread production – joint stock company “Latvijas Maiznieks” and limited liability company “Moris”.

 The amount of production in metal processing and machinery manufacturing companies remained at the level of 2011. Particularly joint stock company „Daugavpils lokomotīvju remonta rūpnīca” should be noted, where amount of realized production increased by 21% and significantly increased the number of workers. Enterprises producing chemical fibers and their products increased amount of production by 9%. Manufacturers of cable connections increased amount of production by 27% due to reconstruction of the company.

Recession is observed only in the sewing industry, where the average amount of production is only 65% compared to last year. Biggest problem of the branch is lack of labour. The number of employees in industrial sector grew by 4% and now is 6414 people.

Construction

It is rather difficult to analyze the results in the construction industry today considering the fact that many large construction companies are in process of insolvency. Amount of works done by construction companies of Daugavpils is only 72% of the previous year. The largest customer of construction work in the city is Daugavpils City Council. At the end of 2012 there were some new tenders. The main amount of construction works will be done in 2013.

The railway

In Daugavpils the turnover of wagons in 2012 remained at the level of 2011. In the structure of the Latvian Railway are employed 1108 people.

Service enterprises of Latvian Railway rolling stock, Locomotive repair centre and Wagon repair centre showed an increase of 33%, 1046 persons work at these companies.

Unemployment

Number of unemployed persons during the year decreased by 748 persons, but the number of unemployed registered persons still is 4762. Unemployment rate is 10.6%.
