Education is one of the priorities in Daugavpils and the biggest part of financing from the city’s budget goes to the sphere of education. There are 28 pre-school education institutions and 18 comprehensive schools functioning in Daugavpils. Various after-school activities are available for children and youth living in the city. Daugavpils Education Department implemented the competence of education in Daugavpils city. There are four schools of professional education in Daugavpils (“Daugavpils Trade Vocational Secondary School”, “Daugavpils Music Secondary School”, “Daugavpils Art Secondary School “Saules skola”), two of them are professional education centres of competence – “Daugavpils Technical School of Building” and “Daugavpils Technical School” with material-technical resources in different spheres. These resources provide students with the chance to work with the newest technologies. Often professional schools are the ones providing city with many young, well-qualified profession specialists.
Daugavpils secondary schools in Daugavpils are always between the best-rated schools in Latvia, because they have high results in the state exams, in national and international Olympiads and scientific competitions. Educational institutions of the city are carrying out study programs, which include deeper acquirement of some specific subjects in elementary and secondary schools. They are also implementing educational programs for students with special needs who are studying in comprehensive schools.
Daugavpils is a city for students. It is possible to say, because there are many young people living here and various higher education institutions are available here. The oldest and the biggest one is Daugavpils University. During last few years it has gained its status as a very important centre of science. Daugavpils University offers new possibilities for
students and lecturers every year. Huge investments are made to increase the quality of the study programs offered in Daugavpils University as well as to improve the environment accessibility.
The new Life Sciences and Technologies building was built and the corpus of the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was renovated at Parādes Street 1, also the corpus and concert hall were renovated at Vienības Street 13. Construction work was organized through the ERAF projects and cost more than 11 million euro. Laboratory of the university was equipped with modern technologies, which will provide students with the possibility to
work with the equipment equal to the one in the major laboratories in the world.
There are 8 institutions of higher education in Daugavpils, which include students not only from the region of Latgale, but from the whole Latvia.
