MARTINSONS AWARD


Celebrating the centenary of the Latvian state, Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics, in cooperation with Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, announces application to the International Juried Ceramics Exhibition MARTINSONS AWARD, which will feature on the programme of the II Latvia International Ceramics Biennale.

Participation in the International Juried Ceramics Exhibition MARTINSONS AWARD is open to individual artists and groups irrespective of age or nationality. Each participant can enter only one piece. Application is closed to gold, silver or bronze prize winners of the 2016 MARTINSONS AWARD in both national and international categories.

Submitted artwork will have no thematic limitations. The ceramics component in the artwork will be at least 80%, and the work will have been completed in 2017/2018. No artwork will have been displayed in other juried exhibitions or published in catalogues. At least one dimension of the artwork (height, width or depth) will be 25 cm or more. No maximum limitations for artwork dimensions will be set.

To apply for the International Juried Ceramics Exhibition, artists need to fill out an online application form by 1 April 2018. Artwork for the exhibition will be selected from the applications, which will be evaluated by an international jury featuring competent professionals:

Dainis Pundurs (LATVIA), artist, associate professor at the Ceramics Department of the Art Academy of Latvia, MARTINSONS AWARD 2016 gold prize winner in the national category;

Marie-Josée Comello (THE NETHERLANDS), artist, MARTINSONS AWARD 2016 gold prize winner in the international category;

Ilona Romule (LATVIA), artist, board member of the International Academy of Ceramics;

Bernd Pfannkuche (GERMANY), publisher, editor-in-chief of the NEUE KERAMIK/NEW CERAMICS Journal, member of the International Academy of Ceramics;

Anthony Stellacio (USA), artist, curator, scholar, member of the International Academy of Ceramics;

Claudia Casali (ITALY), art theoretician, director of the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza;

Valentīns Petjko (LATVIA), artist, curator, Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics.

 

Applications will be evaluated in two stages. During the first stage, artwork will be selected for the MARTINSONS AWARD Juried Exhibition scheduled to run 6 July through 9 September 2018 at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. During the second stage, the jury will review the artwork in person and award 6 prizes – 3 in the national category and 3 in the international category. Winners of the MARTINSONS AWARD will receive cash prizes ranging from 2000 EUR to 5000 EUR. Artwork produced by the winners will become part of the organizers’ contemporary ceramics collection and continue to delight audiences in Latvia and beyond.
