Žanna Kulakova visited social institutions


On the 20th of November the mayor of Daugavpils Žanna Kulakova visited several institutions of the department of Social affairs: social shelter at Šaura street, 23, the social house at Šaura street, 28, the Center of Family Support at Šaura street, 26, and at the Center of Support for persons with mental disabilities at Arhitektu street, 21 and day centers of social rehabilitation and services at Liepājas street, 4. The purpose of this visit is a constructive conversation with employees of these institutions. The mayor congratulated once again collectives with a recent Day of a Social worker, listened to suggestions of social workers to improve the activity of these structures of SAD, their request considering the current budget of the city.

Range of social services in the Department of Social Affairs is very wide, so the problems of institutions are very different. Building on at Šaura street 23 needs thorough repair and asphalting of yard area. Social workers of the shelter have also made some proposals considering the extension of the recently opened soup kitchen working hours, and the completion of its menu with one hot dish. This kitchen is popular not only among residents of social houses and night shelter, but also among the lower-income residents of Ķīmijas housing estate and the whole city. In addition, workers of night shelter are turning to the city residents with a request for humanitarian help in the form of winter clothing and footwear, mostly male. In anticipation of winter cold this question is very pressing. Today, night shelter services are using 17 to 25 homeless people, with the beginning of colds this figure will double. There is a request from creative workshops of Day center for people with mental disabilities. Lots of handmade souvenirs are made by its visitors, various pieces of art, work on which is very helpful in social integration and rehabilitation of people with mental diseases, for the development and improvement of their health. Due to participation in various charity fairs the gifts made ​​in the walls of the center by its fosterlings, in the 2.5 years managed to gain approximately 1,000 lats. The money was spent to the purchase of materials and tools for further artistic works. Now, in t the threshold of Christmas and New Year, the Day Center for persons with mental disabilities stuff members are turning to the representatives of businesses asking help in the purchase of raw materials for creativity. These can be scraps of fabric, trims of the tree, environmentally friendly decorative materials, colored paper, paint, and other stuff.
