Religious denominations and churches

 

There are churches of different denominations in Daugavpils city: Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, Old Believers' and Judaism, etc. Catholic traditions are deep and strong in Daugavpils city. St. Peter’s Church was built in 1848 and the architecture of the church has certain features of Classicism. It has some resemblance to Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican. That church was rebuilt and expanded in 1924. Griva's Roman Catholic Church was built in 1889, Virgin Mary's Roman Catholic Church – in 1905. Martin Luther's Church was designed by V.Neimanis, who is the first and main architect in Daugavpils, which has designed many buildings in Latvia. This church was built with the help of Lutheran congregation in 1893. Boris and Gleb Orthodox Cathedral was built on the natural elevation near the Lutheran Church in 1905. In the city there are also Alexander Nevsky, St.Peter and Paul, St.Nicholas Orthodox Churches and Jewish community, which brings together around 600 people. Jewish community are working in the renovated synagogue.
