Daugavpils is a city with old traditions in sport. The Office of Sport at the Department of Sport and Youth Affairs, which plans, implements and organizes sporting events and promotes healthy lifestyle among the citizens, ensures the development of Daugavpils sports industry.
The city has a wide sports infrastructure: Daugavpils Ice Hall, speedway stadium “Lokomotiv”, sport complex “Celtnieks”, Daugavpils Olympic Centre, sports base “Dzintariņš”, active rest and sports track in Stropi, Bike Park in Esplanāde, etc.
There are two municipal professional-oriented sports schools in Daugavpils: “Football Centre Daugavpils” and the Children and Youth Sports School with 18 sports departments.

- Speedway European Championship Final;
- Davis Cup of tennis (Latvia - Monaco);
- Northern European Fencing Championship;
- European Championship of Kettlebell Lifting;
- BigBank Skrien Latvija Daugavpils Halfmarathon stage;
- Korean Ambassador Cup in Taekwondo „Ambassador’s Cup”;
- Graeco-Roman Wrestling Cup in memory of P. Krupeņins;
- Holi Colour Run.
Traditional sporting events:
- Run „Daugavpils – Mežciems”;
- International Boxing Tournament in memory of the brothers Purvinski;
- H.Silovs Athletics Cup;
- Volleyball Cup in memory of F. Vilcāns;
- New Year Run.
Daugavpils athletes have reached high results and are well-known not only in the city and in Latvia, but also abroad.
- Deniss Vasiļjevs (figure skating) – the 7th place at European Figure Skating Championship in 2017, takes the 14th place at World Figure Skating Championship in 2017 and qualifies for PyeongChang Olympic Games in 2018.
- Anastasija Grigorjeva (women’s free wrestling) – the 2nd place at European Championship in 2017, the 8th place at Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016, the Best Athlete of Latvia in 2013 and 2104.
- Andžejs Ļebedevs (speedway) – the 2nd place at the 2nd stage of European Championship in 2017. The best rider of polish Nice League in 2016 and the 2nd place at European Junior Championship.
There are a lot of outstanding athletes in the city, who will definitely achieve good results not only at Latvian Championships, but also at European and World Championships.
Meanwhile, the municipality improves and develops the sports infrastructure in the city, provides support for the athletes and organizes events to promote active and healthy lifestyle.
